Students watch a milking demonstration

In March, elementary students from Owen and Lindbergh elementary schools attended the Tulsa Public Schools Child Nutrition Services Farm to School event. Students learned about different aspects of agriculture and how food gets to the table right here in Oklahoma.

Student leaders from the Future Farmer of America program at Webster High School guided the elementary students through a series of hands-on, engaging stations and activities.

The educational event taught students how fruits and vegetables are grown and raised by Oklahoma farmers, how dairy farms work, and the nutritional value of the foods.

Activities included:

  • Live cow and milking demonstration with Southwest Dairy Farmers’ Mobile Dairy Classroom;
  • Milk sampling with Oak Farms Dairy of Oklahoma;
  • Produce tasting and blender bicycles with Fresh Point;
  • Tulsa Health Department presentation on food deserts and food forestry;
  • Better Day Farms hydroponic lettuce sampling;
  • Seeing farm animals including goats, chickens, pigs, and a horse;
  • Live worm demonstration and information from Oklahoma State University extension master gardeners;
  • Nutrition education presentation with Oklahoma State University extension.
